More about the Pluots/Plumcots..... | |
True Name/ common/ slang names: Pluots and Plumcots are too new to have a scientific name. Description of look and flavor: Pluots are ¾ plum and ¼ apricot which makes them smooth skinned and plum flavored, with more sugar and flavor than any plum you’ve ever had before. Plumcots are 1/2 and ½ plum and apricot and they take on some of the features of both. They are golden in color like an apricot, but the skin is smooth and glossy like a plum. The flavor, however, is nothing like either one of them and is one of my favorites by far. Growth Period/ harvest – They grow between May and September and should be eaten while still firm. Nutritional info – They should have roughly the same nutritional info as plums and apricots. Other uses – Feed them to a liger, they love plumcots! History – These are interspecific hybrids of plums and apricots that were created in the 1990’s by Floyd Zaiger. Interesting facts/ misnomers - Zaiger Genetics have bred about 20 varieties of pluot and one type of aprium.
