Rainier Cherries

« Back to Meet the Fruits!

Another gorgeous cherry, but not a prototypical one.  The Rainier has a golden skin that blushes pink or crimson.  They are extremely delicate and damage easily from temperature, rain, and handling which makes growing them risky and expensive.  Many farmers employ special pickers to handle Rainiers and pay them more so they can take their time when delicately plucking them from their branches.  In an ideal situation, the cherries will have only been handled once by the time they leave the farm.  Rainiers, despite all the difficulties in growing and shipping, remain one of the most popular cherries to eat because they taste the sweetest.  They don't have more sugar, but like white peaches and white nectarines, Rainier cherries are a low acid variety that does not have any tartness to distract from the sugar.  You'll taste the difference.
