Plums

« Back to Meet the Fruits!

True Name/ Common Name:
Prunus is the genus and the different varieties are all divided under species names
Common name – plums, also called gages

Description of Look and Flavor:
Plums are in the same genus as peaches and cherries  and the fruit is structured much the same way.  A plum is roughly the same size as a small peach with tight, smooth, skin like a cherry.  The pit is not pocked like the peach’s is.  They vary in size and color, ranging between green, to red, to purple, to almost black on the outside and having flesh that is some shade of white, yellow, or red.  Plums are the best for eating when they are just slightly soft to the touch.  They are extremely juicy and sweeter than sugar itself.

Growth Period/ Harvest
Plums come out in late May and last through the summer until September.

Nutritional Info

Other Uses
In Asia, pickled plums are sold as a main ingredient in several rice dishes.
Plums are also very popular in Serbia either as fresh fruit or in the form of an alcoholic drink called slivovitz.

History
It used to be believed that apricots were just plums from Armenia, but it was not true at all, though they are related.
