Sweet Lemon

« Back to Meet the Fruits!

True Name/ common/ slang names:
 Sweet Lemons – Citrus limettiodes

Description of look and flavor:
Sweet lemons look very similar to regular lemons.  They are roughly baseball sized or slightly smaller and have a leathery yellow rind.  They are football shaped and the flesh is segmented like that of all citrus fruits.  These, however, do not have the amount of acid that most lemons do and therefore can be eaten out of hand.  Sweet lemons provide a delicious and healthy way to make homemade lemonade without using pounds of sugar to cut the tang.

Growth Period/ harvest –
Sweet lemons are grown primarily in the Mediterranean and Southern Asian countries, especially in India.  Harvest time is in the winter and spring only and production is not very heavy.  Their susceptibility to a North American root virus has prevented them from being widely grown in the U.S. so far.

Nutritional info –
These are obviously high in vitamin c, as is all citrus, and good sources of limonoids which cleanse the lungs.  They also have a slew of vitamin a and potassium.

Other uses –
Lemon juice is a natural preservative.  It can be applied to cut fruit to keep them from browning and it can also be added to potted plants in order to add lifespan to the flowers.

History –
Some people claim that sweet lemons were the actual kind of fruit that the old explorers used to plant along trade routes to prevent scurvy, not oranges or grapefruit.

Interesting facts/ misnomers -
Sweet lemons and sweet limes are more of a description of the fruit than a classification.  Sweet lemons are classified as a variety of citrus that is linked more closely with limes than lemons.  The sweet lemon and sweet lime are different species, but both lime-like.  They get the name sweet lemon because their skin is more yellow than green.
