On Friday April 4th 2008, Paul Smit donated and planted a tree to the San Diego Red Cross WIC Program work site. Commemorating Earth Day, healthy eating, and healthy living, the CFC partnered with the Network for a Healthy California and Worksite Program Coordinator, Jessica Cerra.
Here is what Jess had to say:
"The California Fruit Company has joined forces with the Network for a Healthy California - Worksite Program to help provide low-income work places in San Diego with fresh fruit. Weekly fruit deliveries from the Orchard to Office program are a convenient and affordable way for work site employees to enjoy fresh fruit at work and engage in a healthy behavior. The California Fruit Company took this idea a step further by donating a navel orange tree to the American Red Cross WIC Program work site. The employees helped to plant the tree, which will produce fresh oranges in one year's time - now this is an innovative way to access fruit at work!"
The CFC is participating in another garden planting soon. Jessica adds, "Fruit trees are also being donated for a community garden planting at the Tubman-Chavez Multicultural Center which will challenge the community in the area to go greener and healthier, be more informed, and eat more fruit."
